Weekend Getaway to Paso Robles Wine Country

September 23, 2016

Paso Robles, located in the Central Coast of California, is by far one of the most gorgeous yet relaxing weekend getaway spots on the West Coast. It has a very small town feel and lots of green (or golden, depending on the time of year), lush scenery and rolling hills. It is a great alternative to the often crowded Napa Valley in Northern California. We were surprised by the multitude of wineries located throughout Paso Robles, and all in relatively close proximity. The charm of the wineries and the small town center with thriving bars and restaurants made it easy to quickly fall in love! We've featured our favorite wineries and other recommendations for a visit to Paso Robles.

DAOU Vineyards

Our absolute favorite winery was DAOU Vineyards. It is located on a hilltop with cascading lavender as you drive up the hill and vineyards surrounding the winery. It has a Spanish-style decor and the most magnificent views from all angles. There is a tranquil fountain outside, and lots of outdoor seating so that you can enjoy the views with your cheese or charcuterie plate along with a variety of absolutely divine wine selections. We didn't taste a wine here that we didn't like, so we highly recommend this for all wine lovers. The inside is just as beautiful, with a warm fire place, additional seating and a very spacious tasting bar. Additionally, the staff was very pleasant and knowledgeable about not only the wine, but also the history of DAOU and how it came to be the wonderful destination it is today.

Thacher Winery and Vineyard

Another one of our favorite wineries was Thacher. It is a very quaint and quiet stop, with goats and chickens on the property and an enchanting rustic barn. They even let us take a peek inside for a few pictures. If you are a Zin fan, then this is the place for you! It was so relaxing here that it was hard to leave and move on to the next stop.

Denner Vineyards

Denner is another great place to visit if you are looking for a scenic experience. They also had magnificent views surrounding the property, and a plethora of unique, high-end wines with distinct flavors. Be sure to call ahead and make an appointment as you will need a code to get on to the property.

Halter Ranch Vineyard

Last but not least, is the picture perfect Halter Ranch Vineyard. We just fell in love with this charming winery. As you pull into the entrance of the property, there is a beautiful victorian farmhouse. You then pass an old barn which leads up to a picturesque covered bridge. From there, you follow the road up to the tasting room. Inside the tasting room there is wall to wall glass with a view of the vineyards for you to enjoy as you taste their delicious wines. Truly magnificent, and another spot that was hard to leave.

Restaurants & Accommodations

While we drank so much delicious wine in Paso Robles, we also found some great spots for food. Our favorite restaurant was Artisan, known for their local, organic and sustainable food, but most importantly their incredibly delicious and unique dishes (and cocktails)!
